Where should the limits to freedom of speech be set?

Editor's note: New debates on the Debating Europe! Now the topic is.. freedom of speech.

It’s very easy to say there should be ‘no limits’ to freedom of speech. However, most people would agree it should be illegal to publish a person’s address along with instructions on the best ways to rough them up. Almost all countries have laws against harassment, or incitement to commit crimes, as well as restrictions on libel or slanderous speech.

Can social media help engage young people in politics?

Editor's note: Debating Europe start important debates on social media and young people engagement in politics. Follow the @Eunetwork!

32% of Europeans use the internet to follow politics. However, that number is even higher for young people, and over 40% of Europeans aged 15-24 say they have expressed their views on public issues via social media in the past two years versus only 25% of 45-54 year olds. And, despite declining voter participation, a wave of so-called “populist parties” are challenging mainstream traditional political parties in many European countries, often making effective use of social media in order to do so.

Debating Europe are starting new round of the discussions about European sensitive issues. Today's topic: Europe and terrorism. After the September 11th attacks, European support for the “War on Terror” was high. Large majorities in Britain, France and Germany initially supported the US-led War on Terror, and it was not until the 2003 invasion of Iraq that that support began to evaporate. Even in the post-Bush era, a 2012 German Marshall Fund poll found that 71% of EU respondents approved of US President Obama’s efforts to fight international terrorism.

Sintija Bernava: we say EU, but think Latvia!

Editor's note: Sintija Bernava has a long-standing professional experience working for the Parliament of Latvia (Saeima) and the Government of Latvia, now chairman of the NGO "DONUM ANIMUS" . Sintija points out important priorities of the Latvian EU Presidency in the 2015. With this publication we also would like to start debates and welcome different opinions on the topic.

Latvia is a member of the EU since 2004 and from January 1, 2015, it will become the presiding country of the Council of the European Union (hereinafter — the EU), taking over the lead from Italy, which held the Presidency of the Council for the second half of 2014. Then following Latvia the Presidency will be taken over by Luxembourg in the second half of 2015.. The so-called Trio Presidency of the EU Council has been introduced since 2009, with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. Practically the Trio Presidency means that each Presidency is being implemented jointly by three Member States, each assuming the presiding role after the other. Each Trio country consecutively holds the Presidency for six months, based on a joint work program established for that Trio.

What does it mean to YOU to be “European”?

Posted: 2014-11-03
Category: Europe

The question of what it means to be “European” comes up regularly on Debating Europe. In the past, we’ve debated whether a common European identity is possible, whether you feel European, and what EU citizenship means to you. These are all important questions, and your opinion on almost every topic we cover – from immigration, to Eurozone bailouts, to relations with Russia – will be informed by what “Europeanness” means to you (and that’s equally true for our non-European readers).

Eurosceptics often point to the lack of a “European demos” as a fundamental flaw in the project of European integration, whereas pro-Europeans argue that Europe’s common identity is based on common values and a shared way of life.
